Weight Loss - How to Control Your Drinking

When people go on a diet to lose weight the main thing they focus on is restricting the foods that make them fat. These are mainly the foods that are high in sugar and saturated fats such as cakes and pastries. People do not tend to think that alcohol contains lots of calories.

If you want to lose weight and you enjoy a drink then you may want to consider reduce your consumption. It depends on the amount of alcohol that you drink. If you have the occasional drink that is fine however, if you are a heavy drinker it is advisable that you cut down not just for losing weight but for your overall health.

When people go out drinking they usually have it with food. With the two combined they can certainly rack up the calories. However, there are a few ways that you can control your drinking so that is it does not affect your weight too much.

1. If you drink alcohol on an empty stomach it will be absorbed that much more quickly. If you are hungry while you begin drinking you will be more tempted to indulge in high fat and salt snacks such as salted peanuts and potato crisps. Snacks that are high in sodium increase you're thirst and when you are thirstier you will want to drink more. It is also a good idea to eat a meal if you are just going out for the evening to drink as this will absorb the alcohol and make you less prone to snacking.

2. Drink plenty of water before you go out as this will help you to quench your thirst and also help you to reduce the amount of alcohol you consume.

3. It is a good idea to always have a glass or bottle of water with you and sip it with the alcohol. This helps you to become less thirsty, drunk and dehydrated.

4. You can also cut down on your alcohol intake when you dilute your drinks. You can dilute your alcohol drinks with non-alcoholic mixers and beverages such as cola, ginger ale, tonic water, soda or ice.

5. Before you go out you should set yourself a limit and stick to it. For example, if your limit is 2 glasses of wine then try and make the glasses last the whole evening otherwise revert to a non-alcoholic drink when you have reached your limit.
